John Patti will be our Foundation’s Artist in Residence this year. Join us for his workshops and concert performance. A lot of fun in store during this residency!
John Patti will hold two workshops and a final concert performance:
Wednesday 4/24 1:00 – 3:00 Founders Hall: “Steel Drums History & Song”. Will demonstrate the steel drums and how to put together a solo piece; discuss the cultural background of the instrument; and perform some classical songs
Thursday 4/26 2:00 – 4:00 Founders Hall: “Engine Room and the Reserve Steel Band”. Will teach the rhythm “engine room” of a band using multiple percussion instruments such as bongos, congas, shakers, cowbells, tambourines, rum bottles and brake drums; will create the Reserve Steel Band with Reserve member musicians or “want to be’s”; teach a song to the Reserve Steel Band that will be played during his final performance. For this workshop, we will need to sign up two categories: observers and active musician participants with limited 10 active ones first come
Friday 4/27 1:00 Reserve Steel Band practice session Founders Hall
Friday 4/27 7:00 – 9:00 pm Founders Hall: Final Concert Performance: John will perform various genres including jazz standards, classical movements, pop, Caribbean and original pieces; He will discuss the history and culture of the Steel Band briefly for those who have not heard it; Will premier the Reserve Steel Band’s first song.
