The Reserve at Lake Keowee Men’s USTA Tennis Team Wins the SC State Championship

We are so excited to report that our Men’s Tennis Team captured the South Carolina 3.5 team USTA championship this past weekend.

The event held on Hilton Head Island brought together other league winners from around the state to compete for the right to represent South Carolina in the Southern Sectional Championships in Asheville, NC this fall.

The team opened group play on Saturday morning against the undefeated local team playing out of the Hilton Head Plantation with a 2-1 win.

They came back in the afternoon to play the team from the Rock Hill Tennis Center which they lost 2-1.  Luckily at the end of day one, all the teams were 1-1, so they were still in contention to reach the semi-final.

On Sunday, the Reserve team played a team from the Wildewood CC in Columbia. In another really close match, the gentlemen prevailed with another 2-1 victory. With that win, the team now had all eyes on the Hilton Head Island/Rock Hill match.

If HHI won the Reserve team would move on to the semi-finals if Rock Hill won they would get the spot. That match went down to a third set tiebreaker that HHI won propelling the Reserve team to the single-elimination round.

Monday morning the semi-final opponent was a team from the Savannah Lakes Village Tennis Facility. The team pulled out a tight 2-1 win. The key win in that match was Cengiz Kurkcu and Kent McKinney coming from 3-5 down in the first set to win 7-5, 6-3.

The Monday afternoon final was again a tight battle, but the team prevailed with yet another 2-1 win over Florence Tennis Center.

With the teams splitting the first two matches completed everyone made their way to the court where Wiley Bryant and Greg Lewis were teamed up to watch the final match. By that time, Wiley and Greg were serving to close out the match and team title, which they did on their second match.

Everyone contributed over the weekend and throughout the entire season. Especially important to the weekend victory was Cengiz Kurkcu and Kent McKinney who went 5-0 playing together in the tournament.

Congratulations!  Reserve Tennis Rocks!
